Post subject: [disc] Choose Your Own Adventure! |
|
|
Inspired by the Choose Your Own Adventure genre in the current Critique contest, MSPA, and the interactive fiction games I've been playing lately, I feel like doing one of my own. This is a thread to see if people are interested in participating. ^_^
Choices at each junction in the story would be decided by majority--I'd post a poll with choices based on the latest part of the story, and after the deadline I'd take the winning choice and write the next part of the story. Rinse and repeat~
I'd be the one doing the writing, obviously, but people would have the option to post in the thread to sway others to their choice and just discuss the story in general. (Or make suggestions, complaints, etc. Hopefully not complaints. :P)
I'm not yet sure exactly how much planning I'd want to do. (There are two options--lots of serious planning, or letting things happen as the will. I imagine option 2 involves more silliness.) As such, I don't have a definite date, if people do end up being interested--but I'd start by the end of August at the latest, I would hope.
Anyway! Please vote in the (hopefully) self-explanatory poll, and thanks for reading. ^_^

I picked "Other" for probably all the wrong reasons, but I'll try to explain.
I was leaning toward Fantasy, but I don't want to do the whole dragons/knights/elves/orcs thing, because if you're going to do that, you might as well just play D&D, which I understand is something everyone is already doing.
So I'd like to submit for ela's consideration a modern fantasy, like along the lines of the first seasons of Heroes or LOST, or like the X-Men. Stick us all on a desert island and give us mutant superpowers!
:3
Edit: Smoke monsters and cheerleaders are optional, of course.

Why don't you e-mail the MSPA guy and ask him how he did it? I know Problem Sleuth and Homestuck have had vastly different processes, and it might be a good idea to see how it's working out from either perspective.
I want to play modernized Zork where a grue can eat you.

Oo, modern fantasy~ That sounds like fun. If I were to do it, I might stick with more supernatural things--like Tithe or Neverwhere. I do like X-Men, though...

Nah. It just means that whatever it ends up being, you'll be somewhat interested at the least. \o/

Good idea. I seem to remember reading a blog post or two about his process and how it has evolved. I shall check it out again, and maybe think about e-mailing him, too.

You go south. A grue eats you. Tada~

I have been brainstorming and making notes (mostly last night when I should have been asleep). I think it is tending towards the silly side--no doubt that's the MSPA influence, and the influence of IF like "Lost Pig." Hopefully I can pull that off. ^_^
So far I've worked on mechanics, including the creation of a character who is both in-game and out-game, currently nicknamed Chipper Ela. (I promise that sentence will actually make sense when the time comes.) Once we've got some more votes and discussion, I'll start on basic plot and such. \o/

I know Problem Sleuth and Homestuck have had vastly different processes, and it might be a good idea to see how it's working out from either perspective. | MSPA for Problem Sleuth was "controlled random" which emphasized the player interaction but allowed Andrew (the artist) the ability to choose whichever option most suited his fancy. The previous policy had been to take the first option--no matter what it was--and make a comic on it.
IMO, this first option might work better if you have lots of participation (5+), but the second option might make things move faster even if you don't. Any option of democracy strikes me as inherently too time-costly and silly. Don't you know that bureaucracies take so long for a REASON?

So... use the decision of whoever posts first?
It certainly would be faster--no matter what, there will be some lag as I write the next section, so less time to come to a decision does sound better...
How would people feel about that?

I voted scifi because scifi is COOOOOOOL!
I'll play whatever is chosen, though.

Looks like it'll be some sort of modern fantasy, but I'll leave the poll open until the 15th--don't think I'll have time to work on things until after the contest. ^_^

Howdy~
Things are busy and chaotic at the moment, so this project is on hold until I get my bearings. I am hoping that won't be long (a month at most, fingers crossed) and that people will still be somewhat interested when I return to it. ^_^
